Outlines and a writing update

I have been doing a little writing lately. I have around 400 words for an entry for the contest at The First Line I mentioned the other day. I have been doing my writing during my lunch break at work, as things are still crazy with the newborn at home. It is amazing how a 9 pound baby can make itself feel like 100 pounds when she is hungry and you are trying to hold her while warming up her bottle.

I may have mentioned before that I don't write from an outline. For some reason, I have a hard time thinking that far ahead with my stories to fill in the outline. I begin writing with the basic idea of where I want the story to go and just see where the characters take me in between. I always thought it sounded hokey and voodoo-like for an author to say "see where the characters take me", but I completely understand it now. Maybe some day I will see the light and use an outline. For now, though, it seems like a waste of time.
