First Contact – Story Ideas

When you are on the highway at 1:00 AM, cruise control set at 60 m.p.h., baby toddler finally peacefully asleep in her car seat, you start to think about things.  Last night I started to think about life on other planets, or aliens, or whatever else you want to call them.  There I was, listening to the excellent Thom Hartmann Show on XM Radio and he was talking about the overpopulation of Earth and how bad things are in certain parts of the world.  This got me thinking about what first contact with an alien species would be like and how different it would be depending on where our visitors landed.

Think about it, wouldn’t an alien race’s opinion of us be vastly different (not necessarily better or worse, just different) if they landed in the poorest part of Africa rather than a posh neighborhood in New York City?

What would happen if they landed right in the middle of the war zone in Iraq (I touch on this in a way in my Ficlet Civil War on an Unknown Planet)?  This might tell them something about us as a species.

Would the balance of power in the world shift if the aliens landed in say a communist country rather than somewhere like the U.K.?

These are the questions that go bouncing around in my head when I’ve had little sleep.  I think there are some interesting story ideas there.  Feel free to use them if you like.  If you do, tell me about it as I think something interesting could come out of it.   As always, feel free to discuss in the comments.  Comments make me happy 🙂

Libby and Henry Rollins

Apparently if you’re a convicted felon in America and obstruct a federal investigation of the outing of a covert CIA operative you don’t have to do any jail time, so long as you worked for the Vice President’s office. Happy 4th of July, America 😦

This was where I was going to end this post this morning, on a really down note because that is how I felt. Then I came across this interview with Henry Rollins and the following video that made me feel a little better. At least someone out there like Henry Rollins is still fighting the good fight. One warning with the video. There is some “language” there, though not a lot.

Sorry about the political post. I really had to get that off my chest.
