I think you need something a little more powerful
I don’t know how things are where you live, but at the moment Pennsylvania is hot! I’m not talking, “boy I have a little perspiration forming on my forehead I better break out the little hand fan“. No, I’m talking “I can actually smell my skin burning and wait, are those vultures circling over my head trying to get me” hot. It got up to 98 degrees yesterday, and was still 90 degrees at 8:00 PM, when the sun starts to descend and the temperature usually begins to fall. Not yesterday. In fact it was still 80 degrees at midnight (and yes I was still awake).
Our daughter has been having trouble sleeping the past few nights, so we let her sleep in our room in her “pack and play” since we have an air conditioning unit in our window. Thankfully she slept through the night.
I just want to say something here about window air conditioning units. We live in a house that doesn’t have central air conditioning (the house is about 60 years old) and also has a metal roof. The upstairs literally cooks. The air conditioning units we have are the cheapest investment I have made that has improved my comfort the most. The one in our bedroom cost around $100, which I think is a pretty reasonable price for a good night’s sleep.
The air conditioner we have downstairs is a bigger unit, so it costs more (around $200), but cools that whole area enough to make it bearable. I bought that one last summer when my wife decided to stay at home with our daughter full-time. I know I wouldn’t have been able to stand that house without A.C. so I doubt they could either.
