I Want My Mummy

My wife and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary last night. My sister and her fiance were nice enough to babysit for us, so we were able to get some alone time. It was nice.

First, we ate at a nice Italian restaurant in town, complete with romantic lighting. Even better, each booth in the restaurant has curtains you can draw, so you can feel like you are alone with your sweetie at home (without having to worry about the dishes). It’s a great place. I even stopped myself from ordering beer or wine, because my wife is pregnant and can’t drink.

The restaurant is situated below an old opera house which now houses a movie theater. It would have been nice to just walk upstairs and watch a movie, but they were only playing The Dark Knight. I so want to see that flick, but I knew it would be unsettling to my wife. So, we hopped in the car after dinner and drove a bit to one of those stadium seating theaters and watched The Mummy 3. *sigh*

I’d like to say The Mummy 3 was a good movie. However, I don’t like to lie. It was not good. It was the opposite of good. I wasn’t expecting much going in, and that’s what I got.

I think the badness began with the replacement of Rachel Weisz. With a wink and a nod, they used a different actress (Maria Bello?) in the role of Brendan Fraser’s wife. Let’s just her English accent was unconvincing.

Then there was the dialog. Many, many, instances of eye-rolling dialog. I suppose this is typical of summer action movies.

On the plus side, the film looked very nice. This is clearly where they spent most of their budget. There were even cgi Yetti, and they were pretty well done. In fact, the Yetti were the highlight of the film for me.

Anyhow, we had a pretty nice time out. It felt like old times again. When we got home, our daughter was already asleep. From what we hear, she went to bed early. Why doesn’t she do that when we’re home?! 🙂
